The course on Colored Gemstones is organized in close collaboration with HRD Antwerp.  The course provides complete and detailed technical preparation for qualitative and valid analysis that is reliable for colored gems. For those who want to obtain a high level preparation on coloured gemstones, this course will prove to be an excellent opportunity to deepen the knowledge of investigation technique and the relative instruments. At the end of the course a  “Gemstone Identification” will be issued by HRD.

The course aims at educating professionals able to easily provide an appropriate evaluation of coloured gemstones, an indispensable condition to buy and sell well, through an attentive qualitative analysis.

Analysis of coloured stones: general criteria and procedures. Qualitative elements in transparent, opaque, translucent stones.

First week: Gem identification basics

  • Optics and gemstones.
  • Physical properties of gemstones.
  • Crystallography.
  • Gemmological instruments.
  • Identification techniques.

Second week: Systematic classification of the most important gemstones

  • Mineralogy of gemstones.
  • Systematic classification of minerals.
  • Systematic classification of gemstones: ruby and sapphire (corundum)-emerald and other beryl -alexandrite and other chrysoberyl- spinel group – garnet group – quartz group (e.g. citrine, amethyst) – topaz – tourmaline – zircon – peridot.
  • Study of inclusions using a gemological microscope.
  • Classification of inclusions.

Third week: Distinction between natural and synthetic ruby, sapphire and emerald

  • Lab. grown gems like Verneuil and identification.
  • Artificial glass and assembled gems.
  • Final exams.
